Two forms. Two gestures. The same soul.
These vases were made to hold flowers, but they were also made to stand alone. Their speckled white stoneware carries the memory of the Basque Coast limestone: porous, alive, marked by time. The serrated collar at the rim, hand-cut, irregular, deliberate, is a crown, a wave, a cliff edge.
One is rounder, softer, more ancient in its silhouette. The other is angular, faceted, geometric, a form that catches light like a cut stone. Together, they are a conversation between two ways of being in the world.
Born from stone
Part of the À Ras Bord series, Côte des Basques, 2026, these pieces were not made for a gallery. They were placed on stone shaped by years of pressure, water, and salt, on the natural walls of the Côte des Basques at sunset. Every vein of rust and white in that limestone tells a story of slow transformation. Clay undergoes the same, carried by a hand and accelerated by fire. Placing ceramics on those rocks was an act of recognition. They are not foreign to that landscape. They are an accelerated version of it.
This series marks the beginning of a new phase in Cecile Mestelan's practice: more mature, more affirmed, more free. Each piece carries that moment with it.
Handmade in Biarritz
Each Flower Vase is handmade in Biarritz by Cecile Mestelan. Because it is shaped by hand, no two pieces are identical. Dimensions, colour, and texture vary slightly from piece to piece. That variation is not a flaw. It is the work.
